For 15 years, Tula Rios has proudly served the students of Harker Heights Elementary, carrying her Hispanic heritage as both a source of strength and inspiration.
Born in Ecuador, she brings her culture, her language, and her life experiences into her work as an educator, reminding students and families that our roots are something to honor and celebrate.

Rios was born in Ecuador, a country known for its breathtaking Pacific coast, the Andes Mountains, the Amazon rainforest, and the Galápagos Islands. After earning a degree in international business and working in global trade, she moved to Texas with her husband, who served in the U.S. Army.
While raising her children, she began volunteering at their schools and discovered her calling.

“I had no idea then that I was going to become a teacher,” she said. “I fell in love with teaching, and the creative and interactive methods teachers were utilizing with the students.”

Rios proudly became a teacher in Killeen ISD. For the past 15 years, she has served at Harker Heights Elementary, inspiring students to be proud of their language, their culture, and their potential.

“My Hispanic heritage is integral to who I am,” Rios shared. “It has shaped what I believe, what I value, and how I interact with those around me. Language and culture link me to the accomplishments of my ancestors. It is the foundation upon which I proudly stand as I claim my place in the world.”

That foundation shines in her classroom. Rios strives to instill in her students a love for learning in both Spanish and English, and she treasures the trust families place in her. Over the years, she has been invited to celebrations, leaned on for guidance, and relied upon as a partner in education.

From the start, Rios says KISD made her feel welcome and valued. “I was warmly welcomed here 15 years ago and quickly made to feel that my bilingual skills and cultural background were recognized and appreciated,” she said. “KISD has always put students first. I am proud to be part of an organization that consistently prioritizes academic and social growth for every child.”

For Hispanic Heritage Month, Rios hopes her story inspires the next generation. “Each person, with determination and perseverance, has an opportunity to achieve their dreams,” she said. “But never forget where you come from and who you are as you pursue those dreams.”

Her journey is a golden reminder that our educators are proud of their roots, proud to serve our students, and proud to be part of the KISD family.
